God is always calling us to something, or rather someone, greater than this world can offer. God is constantly in pursuit of His creation. God created creation. God sustains creation. God is redeeming, and in the end will fully redeem, all of creation. When we look around and see that there is goodness in the world we can only equate that with the loving grace of our Heavenly Father. This same God who is so intimately involved in creation is also the one who died on the cross for the sins of mankind. This is the same God who is walking with us each and every moment of each and every day.
The chorus of this song is a declaration that we, Christians, will run from the things of this world, that promise to fulfill us and sustain us, and run towards the loving embrace of our God, who alone can and will fulfill us. This is a bold declaration that we can only declare once we know who our God is – we must know the God that we are running towards. This is exactly the goal of the verses.
Truths of God’s character saturate this song. God is good in the face of our sinfulness. God’s love is shown throughout our lives and the lives of those who love him. Christ is the light in the darkness of the world, the hope of our redemption. God is able to calm all of our fears. Even though we wander and turn from God He promises that there is nothing we can do to separate us from the love of God. Christ is the one who conquered death so that when we trust in Him we do not have to fear death! Our God is more than we can comprehend and yet what we know about Him is far greater than we can imagine.
All that we are called to do is surrender to this amazing God. However, giving up the reigns is the hardest thing to do. This song is trying to call us back to God – back to the fullness and richness of our Creator, Redeemer, Father, Sustainer, and Sanctifier.”My heart will sing no other Name – Jesus, Jesus.” Let this prayer follow you through your days, “God help me to sing no other name. Help me to lift your name high. Help me to run to you when I need fulfillment because the name of Jesus conquers every fear, stills every anxious thought, defeats the darkness, and welcomes me home with loving-kindness. You, God, are good. I am not.”
