Verse 1

I’m holding on to You.

It’s all I know to do

When fear has had me bound,

When enemies surround

There’s freedom in this truth:

My salvation is in You

Verse 2

You are the Rock I’ve found

Above the shifting ground

Amid a raging war

You’re the One I’m fighting for

For all of my years

My banner will be clear

And I remember the nails that You took for me

When You died in my shame and iniquity

Jesus You have set me free

The thorns of my pain You wore in a crown

When You bowed Your head Your love was poured out

And my chains hit the ground

I am Yours

And even though the waves they crash below

I’m holding onto love I’m holding onto love

I am Yours

Forever all my days I lay before Your holy love

I’m holding onto love

When You were dead in your trespasses and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our trespasses, having canceled the debt ascribed to us in the decrees that stood against us. He took it away, nailing it to the cross!

Colossians 2:13-14

This song is a great declaration of the freedom that comes from Christ.

There is only one person that fights for us when we fail to even look His way. When the war is raging all around us, Jesus is fighting for us. We have a rock to stand on when the world around us is shifting (verse 2). We are not promised that we will have everything we want in life; we are not promised that we will be immensely happy all of our lives; we are not promised that life will be easy. However, we now have nothing to fear because of the blood of Jesus Christ. Our salvation comes from Christ and Christ alone because of the “nails that [He] took for [us] (chorus).”

Like sheep we have all gone astray and are in constant need of redemption (Isaiah 53:6). Even when we loose track of God’s path, we can cling to the fact that we belong to God and He belongs to us (Exodus 29:45).

“When You bowed Your head Your love was poured out and my chains hit the ground (chorus).” The death of Jesus Christ on the cross brought forth great healing and freedom. The sins that had held us in the past are no longer weighing down our shoulders. Lucky for us, our future is determined not by our past, but by the past that Christ has been rewriting for us. All we must do is hold onto the love that God has for us (bridge).

The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress. – Psalm 46: 7, 11
