Advent is the season that leading up to Christmas. Advent is a time of preparation and anticipation, a special time set aside to look forward while looking backwards. The word advent means “the arrival of a notable person, thing, or event.” So by the word itself the season is a season to prepare for the arrival of a notable person – Jesus, the Christ. This, we look forward and backwards to accomplish.
First, we look backwards to the first coming of Jesus, the incarnation. This was the moment He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. The long awaited ruler and Savior came to the earth in the flesh. The Word of God was born.
Secondly, we look forward to the second coming of the Christ, the Son of God. This is the hope of our future with God. When Christ ascended into heaven He told His disciples that He was preparing a place for them and He will return to the earth and with Him heaven will come down.
Advent is a time to hope. One might say there is “a thrill of hope” as “the weary world rejoices” because the King of the world has come, lived, died for us, was raised from the dead, ascended into heaven, and will come again to dwell with us for all of eternity.
This Advent season, let hope rise in you and let your generosity grow as our Christ has generously and graciously given us the gift of eternal life spent with God.
